On the following day, when they came from Bethany, He was hungry. And seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, He went to see if He could find anything on it. When He came to it, He found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs. And He said to it, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And His disciples heard it. Mark 11:12-14
What is wrong with the first tree?
Pictured above are apple trees. One is covered with beautiful blooms and leaves. The other is covered with leaves and fruit. Mark 11:12-14 is about producing fruit but it is also about all the struggles Jesus had with the beautiful temple and the glorious teachers and their fine apparel. They were HIDING behind their nice things (leaves).
Lets look at the leaves in your life.
Are you hiding behind the leaves? Or, are you producing fruit?
- Is your worship to God hidden behind the beautiful church building? Or, do you take your songs and praise outside into the world regardless of what others think?
- Is your Christian faith hidden beneath the fine clothes you wear, or do you stand up for the truth by showing people what the Bible says about the misquoted/misunderstood passages they openly talk about (and practice)?
- Are you joyful because of the things you have or places you get to go? Or, are you joyful because you continue to be tirelessly inconvenienced serving others for Jesus?
Think about being inconvenienced to do something for someone in need. Think about studying the Bible with a stranger or sharing a passage with a co-worker. Christianity was never meant to be a glorious adorning of outward things, but was meant to be glorious in the faith building work of God. Tired doesn’t look good, being fruitful is good. Be challenged, Be tired, Be fruitful.
